Respiratory protective equipment must be used according to the characteristics of the operator

1. Consider the user's facial features

Close-fitting masks, such as half masks and full face masks, depend on a tight seal against the user's face to provide effective protection. However, since people have different facial structures, not every mask design may fit everyone properly. A poorly fitting mask can lead to air leakage, reducing its effectiveness. To prevent this issue, it’s important to choose a mask that matches your face size. While masks come in various sizes, simply selecting the right size isn’t enough to guarantee a proper fit.

Face fit testing is a reliable method used to determine whether a specific type of close-fitting mask works well for an individual. This process allows both workers and safety officers to make informed decisions about respiratory protection equipment, ensuring a secure seal and minimizing the risk of exposure to harmful substances. It is especially crucial when choosing negative-pressure respirators, where even small leaks can be dangerous.

Although new face fit testing methods are becoming more common globally, they are still relatively uncommon in China, with limited availability of pre-made testing kits. As a result, the standard recommends this method for users to consider when selecting appropriate protective gear.

Another important consideration is that men with beards may not be able to achieve a good seal with close-fitting masks. If shaving is not an option, alternative solutions like open-face masks or hoods that don’t require a tight seal should be considered instead.

2. Consider people wearing glasses

Many individuals wear glasses daily, so it’s essential to ensure that their choice of mask doesn’t interfere with their vision or comfort. Full-face masks can sometimes cause issues if the gasket doesn’t sit properly around the glasses, leading to gaps and potential leaks. The best solution is to choose a full-face mask that includes an integrated spectacle frame, or opt for a hood or open-face mask that doesn’t require a tight seal around the face.

3. Some people may not be suitable for respiratory protection

Individuals with certain heart or lung conditions may experience increased breathing resistance when using respiratory protection, which can worsen their condition. Additionally, some people may feel anxious, claustrophobic, or uncomfortable while wearing a mask, which can affect their ability to perform tasks safely and efficiently. In severe cases, this discomfort could increase the risk of accidents.

The standard’s Appendix F, titled "Medical Evaluation of the Use of Respiratory Protective Devices," outlines key medical and psychological factors that should be considered before issuing respiratory protection. It helps identify individuals who may not be suitable for certain types of masks, ensuring that safety measures are both effective and appropriate for each user.
