New pollution source "anthracene" appears in home building materials

A few days ago, the Guangdong Provincial Quality Supervision Bureau conducted the 2013 provincial periodic supervision and inspection. On the 25th, they announced that the quality check covered 15 types of products, including artificial boards, waterproof paints, **kitchen furniture**, bathroom furniture, and other home improvement materials. The results showed a serious issue with substandard products, with many well-known brands found to contain harmful substances, including those linked to cancer. Formaldehyde has long been the top concern for merchants in the artificial board industry and is also the main focus of quality inspections. In this round of testing, out of 322 batches of wood-based panel products from 199 companies in cities like Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Foshan, 38 batches failed the test, with 12 cases due to excessive formaldehyde levels. Several well-known brands were among the non-compliant ones, such as "Daizhou Color Butterfly," "Peng Bang Wood," "Pine Tree," and "KONE." Specifically, two products under the "Daizhou Color Butterfly" brand were found to have high formaldehyde emissions. In addition to formaldehyde, a new chemical term—anthracene—was introduced in this inspection. Like formaldehyde, anthracene is harmful to human health. According to the official announcement, the "Ouqi" brand's 911 polyurethane waterproof coating (5L/set) from Foshan Ouqi Coating Co., Ltd., and the 911 two-component polyurethane waterproof coating (20kg/barrel) from Sanshui Junfu Building Waterproof Material Co., Ltd., were found to have不合格 (non-compliant) levels of anthracene, naphthalene, and solid content. Anthracene is a crystalline chemical substance. While pure anthracene is non-toxic, industrial-grade anthracene can irritate the skin and mucous membranes. High concentrations inhaled may cause severe facial discomfort, and in extreme cases, could lead to toxic encephalopathy or liver damage. Experts from the Quality Supervision Bureau advised the public to request third-party authoritative test reports when purchasing wood-based panels to ensure product safety. Panels meeting the E1 standard (≤9mg/100g using the perforation method, ≤1.5mg/L using the dry method) can be used indoors directly, while those at the E2 level (≤30mg/100g using the perforation method, ≤5.0mg/L using the dry method) must be treated before indoor use. When buying waterproof coatings, it's advisable to avoid products with rough packaging, misshapen containers, or unclear instructions. Opting for well-known brands from reputable manufacturers is recommended. (Editor: Peter)
