Silicone earplugs are one of the most popular types due to their durability and comfort. Their cost is significantly higher than that of homemade alternatives, but they offer long-term value. Before use, they should be softened with warm water. These earplugs are designed for repeated use, with a high hardness that allows them to maintain shape. However, this can sometimes cause discomfort in the ear canal if worn for extended periods. The tight fit helps block noise effectively, reducing it by about 20-30 decibels. Despite being non-porous and airtight, there is a small chance of leakage due to the mismatch between the ear canal's shape and the earplug’s design. This can lead to redness, pain, or even minor injuries, especially when sleeping on one side. While silicone earplugs provide good sound insulation and comfort, they may not be ideal for everyone, especially those with sensitive ears.

Sponge-type earplugs are made from low-pressure foam or high-resilient polyester materials. They have a smooth surface and slow rebound, which makes them comfortable for sleep. They can reduce noise by 25dB-40dB, making them ideal for nighttime use. However, they tend to retain moisture after washing, which limits their reusability. Most are disposable, though some modern versions can be reused for several months if properly cleaned. These are great for people who need quiet sleep without causing irritation.

Wax earplugs were among the earliest forms of noise protection. They can be softened by hand and molded to fit the ear canal. However, they are less hygienic, as wax residue can remain in the ear, leading to infections or discomfort. Long-term use can also cause pain, making them unsuitable for regular or extended wear.

Classified by Shape

The most common type is the bullet-shaped earplug, often used with sponge materials for better comfort and noise reduction. Another popular design is the rocket (T-shaped) type, which is easy to remove but may leave gaps in the ear canal, reducing effectiveness. The trumpet-shaped earplug is ideal for inserting silicone earplugs, while the Christmas tree shape is typically made of silicone and may cause slight discomfort. It is commonly used in industrial settings or for swimming. The pagoda-shaped earplug is a unique design developed by 3M, offering a different fit. Cylindrical earplugs are soft and flexible, allowing them to be shaped to fit the ear canal. However, since both ends are similar in width, they may not fit as well as other shapes.

Labor insurance earplugs are made of silicone and are designed to protect against loud noises in industrial environments. They offer excellent noise reduction but are relatively hard, which can cause discomfort during long use. These are usually equipped with a cord for easy removal. Sleeping earplugs, on the other hand, are made from softer, slow-rebound materials. They provide good noise isolation and are ideal for nighttime use. However, they are not as waterproof as silicone and can be difficult to clean. They are generally not recommended for use in workshops. Swimming earplugs are specifically designed to keep water out of the ear canal. Made from materials like silicone, they are effective but can cause discomfort and are not suitable for daily or sleeping use.
