Plastic milk bottles used to be the dominant choice in the packaging industry due to their low cost and resistance to breakage. However, change is inevitable. Over time, plastic bottles have faced increasing criticism, not just because of their environmental impact, but also due to safety concerns. Issues like plasticizers and bisphenol A (BPA) contamination have raised serious doubts about the safety of plastic packaging, leading many consumers to seek alternatives.
Glass milk bottles are now seen as a safer option, prompting dairy companies to adapt to consumer preferences by offering more eco-friendly and secure choices. Another major drawback of plastic bottles is their poor recyclability and slow degradation, which leads to long-term environmental damage. In contrast, glass bottles can be recycled more efficiently, making them both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Carton packages also offer better degradability compared to plastic, further pushing the industry toward sustainable solutions.
Many consumers today are aware that polycarbonate (PC) materials, which often contain BPA, are banned in several countries. However, they may not realize that not all plastic bottles are entirely safe. BPA, known for its estrogen-like effects, has been linked to endocrine disruption, especially in children and fetuses. Some studies suggest it might also contribute to obesity and even cancer. The European Union banned BPA-containing plastic bottles from March 2011, and other countries like Sweden, the U.S., Canada, and France have implemented similar restrictions.
Even high-quality plastics degrade over time, and repeated use can cause wear and tear, potentially increasing the release of harmful chemicals like BPA. For safety, experts recommend replacing plastic bottles every three months and nipples more frequently.
In terms of material properties, PES and PPSU are known for their excellent heat resistance, followed by PC, while PP (polypropylene) has lower heat resistance but is more cost-effective and widely used in everyday products. Although PP may not be as transparent or heat-resistant as PES or PPSU, it is considered a safer alternative as it doesn’t release BPA. From the outside, PES and PP bottles may appear slightly yellow, but they are capable of withstanding higher temperatures.
