蚌埠 54 supermarkets GM food into counter sales

In an effort to enhance consumer awareness and choice, Handan City will begin selling genetically modified (GM) foods through dedicated counters starting June 1st. As of now, 54 supermarkets across the city have established special counters or designated zones for the sale of GM products. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure transparency and provide clear information to shoppers. The city's first GM food counter was recently set up in the grain and oil section of Carrefour Wanda Plaza. Upon visiting the store, reporters observed that a variety of oils—such as rapeseed oil, soybean oil, and corn oil—all made from genetically modified ingredients—are displayed here. A sign reading "GMO Food Counter" is clearly placed at the sales area or on the shelves. According to officials from the City Food and Drug Administration’s Food Safety Division, businesses that sell GM foods through counters must designate specific areas for these products and ensure they are clearly marked. Importantly, GM and non-GM items must not be sold together. The city is actively promoting this initiative, with all eight major supermarkets in the urban area already having set up GM food counters or special zones. Additionally, 46 large-scale supermarkets in the three counties have also implemented the measure, provided they meet the necessary conditions. This move reflects a growing commitment to informing consumers about the products they purchase and ensuring responsible labeling and display practices. (Bengbu News Network) (Word count: 502)
