KOHLER, Wis. – November 6, 2024 – Kohler Co. is set to bring the captivating interplay between art and manufacturing to the forefront during Miami Art Week 2024 with a new exhibition titled *Makers in Place: Kohler Celebrates 50 Years of Arts/Industry*. Kohler, Jr., this residency is celebrated as one of the most significant collaborations between art and industry in the U.S.
Since its launch, the Arts/Industry program has given more than 500 artists worldwide access to Kohler's industrial facilities in Kohler, Wisconsin. By working alongside skilled professionals like industrial designers, engineers, and specialists in ceramics, enamel, cast iron, and brass, these artists have been able to explore materials and techniques beyond what is typically available in traditional studio settings, leading to fascinating creative fusions.
The exhibition *Makers in Place: Kohler Celebrates 50 Years of Arts/Industry* is curated by Michelle Grabner and highlights notable pieces from the Kohler Co. Art Collection. The displayed works come from artists who have skillfully integrated Kohler’s industrial processes into their broader artistic practices. Among the international roster of artists featured are prominent figures such as Ann Agee, Ghada Amer, Lily Cox-Richard, Jack Earl, Joel Otterson, Woody De Othello, Christine Tarkowski, Tomas Vu, Willie Cole, and Theaster Gates.
Michelle Grabner remarks, “This exhibition honors the boundless creativity unleashed when artists are given the chance to engage with industrial processes. Through this rich tapestry of artwork, viewers can explore the diverse cultural dialogues shaping the essence of objecthood, materiality, concepts, craftsmanship, innovation, and tradition.â€
The Arts/Industry residency program exemplifies the transformative potential of collaboration between artists and industry. This exhibition celebrates half a century of this impactful partnership and its influence on contemporary art and design. Pieces from the Kohler Art Collection frequently tour globally, showcasing the groundbreaking creations born from the Arts/Industry experience.
