Key points of cultivation techniques for winter leeks

The new high-yield and high-quality cold-resistant leek variety, known as the "Winter Solstice Leek," is gaining popularity for its exceptional characteristics. This variety offers high yield, superior quality, stable production, strong disease resistance, and excellent cold tolerance. The Winter Solstice Leeks grow upright, develop quickly, have strong tillering ability, and feature tender, less fibrous stalks with a spicy flavor. Their dark green leaves can be as wide as 1 to 2 cm, and each individual leek weighs around 40 grams. The plant height reaches up to 60 cm, and it can be harvested up to 10 to 11 times per year, yielding approximately 12,000 kilograms per mu (about 667 square meters).

This variety is particularly well-suited for winter cultivation. Even during the coldest months, the plants remain green and continue to grow without going dormant or showing signs of stress. In December, when other plants may struggle, the Winter Solstice Leeks are still thriving with fresh, green leaves. The name "Winter Solstice" reflects its unique ability to flourish in winter conditions. Moreover, in the following spring, it starts growing earlier—about 20 days ahead of other varieties.

The Winter Solstice Leek is ideal for cultivation across various regions in China, including the south, north, east, central, northwest, and northeast. It's an excellent choice for winter and spring leek production, offering farmers a reliable and profitable option.

Cultivation Management Tips:

1. Before planting, prepare the soil by applying 3 cubic meters of farm manure per mu, along with 50 kg of urea or compound fertilizer. It’s best to use a balanced mix of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. After plowing the field, create raised beds based on your needs.

2. For seeding, apply 1 kg of seeds per mu for open fields, and 3–4 kg per mu for protected areas like greenhouses. Soak the seeds in warm or cool water (20°C–25°C) for 6–8 hours before sowing. Then drain the water and sow using a straight or triangular pattern, with a spacing of 5–10 cm between plants and 30 cm between rows. Cover the seeds with 1–2 cm of moist soil and keep the area consistently wet. Seedlings usually emerge within 10–15 days. The best time for direct seeding is between March and May.

3. During the seedling stage, manage weeds and apply top dressing. This variety requires plenty of water and nutrients. When the leeks reach 10–15 cm in height, apply 20 kg of compound fertilizer or urea per acre and water immediately. Fertilization can be done alongside watering by spreading the fertilizer directly into the field. When the plants grow to 25–35 cm (around 4–5 leaves), give them a heavy dose of water and fertilizer—use 25 kg of compound fertilizer or urea per mu. Continue cutting and fertilizing every 30–35 days. In the same year, you can harvest twice, and in the second year, maintain this schedule. About 10 days before winter, ensure adequate watering to help the leeks survive the cold season safely.
