In December 2012, the Guina No. 1 shrimp, developed under the leadership of Professor Chen Xiaohan from the Guangxi Fisheries Research Institute, successfully passed the national examination and was officially approved by the National Commission for the Production of Aquatic Products. This marked the first time a new aquatic species had received state-level recognition, highlighting a significant milestone in China's aquaculture industry.
In 2005, Guangxi introduced a group of South American white shrimps representing five distinct geographic populations. These shrimps were brought in to establish one of the most diverse breeding pools for South American white prawns in the region. Through six generations of selective breeding, researchers successfully developed a new high-yield variety known as "Guihai No. 1," which originated from Caribbean shrimp. This new strain demonstrated remarkable advantages, including a fast growth rate, strong adaptability, high survival rates, and increased yield per unit area. It was well-suited for medium to high-density farming and large-scale shrimp cultivation, outperforming imported varieties in many aspects.
The average weight of Guihai No. 1 shrimp reached 12.6 grams at 60 days, 35.17 grams at 130 days, and 45.46 grams at 150 days. These impressive results quickly gained recognition from seed breeding companies and farmers across the region, who praised its performance and reliability in commercial farming operations. The success of Guihai No. 1 not only boosted local aquaculture productivity but also reduced dependency on foreign shrimp stocks, contributing to the sustainability and development of the domestic shrimp industry.
