NEG develops bendable solar cell glass with a thickness of only 0.1mm

NEG, the world's third-largest manufacturer of glass substrates for liquid crystal displays, has introduced a groundbreaking glass product tailored for next-generation solar cells—specifically, Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs). This ultra-thin glass measures just 0.1mm in thickness and is designed to withstand extreme heat, remaining stable even at temperatures as high as 500°C. The company plans to launch the product in 2014, marking a significant step forward in solar technology. Reports suggest that major automotive and electronics companies, including Sony and Nissha, are already working on DSSC solutions that can generate power from indoor lighting. These innovations are expected to reach mass production within the next one to two years.

The new glass developed by NEG serves as a protective cover for the surface of solar cells. It features a transparent conductive film applied to its ultra-thin 0.1mm surface, making it significantly lighter and more compact than current alternatives—roughly 1/10 the size and weight. This advancement not only improves efficiency but also opens up new possibilities for flexible solar cell designs. Due to its remarkable thinness and flexibility, the glass could be used in a wide range of applications, from portable devices to curved or wearable solar systems. As renewable energy technologies continue to evolve, this innovation highlights the growing importance of lightweight, durable, and adaptable materials in the solar industry.
