The world's third-largest manufacturer of glass substrates for liquid crystal displays, NEG (Nippon Electric Glass), has unveiled a groundbreaking glass product tailored for next-generation solar cells—specifically, Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs). This ultra-thin glass measures just 0.1mm in thickness and boasts exceptional heat resistance, remaining stable even at temperatures as high as 500°C. NEG is set to launch the product in 2014, signaling a major step forward in solar technology.
According to recent reports, several leading companies, including Sony and Nissha, are actively exploring the potential of DSSCs for indoor applications, where they can generate electricity from low-light environments. These companies are aiming to achieve mass production within the next 1-2 years, highlighting the growing interest in this innovative energy solution.
The glass developed by NEG serves as a protective cover for the surface of solar cells. It features a transparent conductive film applied on its ultra-thin 0.1mm surface, making it significantly lighter and more compact than current industry standards—reducing both thickness and weight by approximately 90%. Moreover, due to its remarkable flexibility, the glass opens up new possibilities for producing flexible solar cell products, expanding their application in various industries, from portable electronics to building-integrated photovoltaics.
This advancement not only enhances the efficiency and versatility of solar technology but also paves the way for more sustainable and adaptable energy solutions in the future.
