Toshiba 5cm square organic thin film photovoltaic cell conversion efficiency of 9.9%

Toshiba made a significant breakthrough in organic photovoltaic (OPV) technology on July 31, 2014, when it announced that its trial-produced 5cm x 5cm OPV module achieved a record conversion efficiency of 9.9%. This marked the highest efficiency for modules of that size globally. Additionally, the company's 1cm x 1cm OPV cell reached an impressive efficiency of 11.2%. The company set an ambitious target to push the efficiency of large-scale modules—around 30cm x 30cm—beyond 10% by 2015. This progress came just two years after Toshiba first revealed its 5cm x 5cm OPV module in September 2012, which had an efficiency of 7.7%, with a unit efficiency of 9.2%. To achieve this improvement, Toshiba enhanced its self-developed p-type organic semiconductor material, which is capable of absorbing longer wavelengths of light. The company also introduced an inverted structure design, which helped improve performance and stability. Although the manufacturing process remained largely unchanged from the 2012 module, Toshiba incorporated advanced simulation techniques to optimize the component’s structure. This allowed them to significantly increase the fill factor (FF), a key parameter that directly affects the overall efficiency of solar cells. By combining these innovations with their existing production method—known as "Meniscus Coating"—Toshiba was able to achieve remarkable results. The improvements highlight Toshiba’s ongoing commitment to advancing flexible and lightweight OPV technology, which has potential applications in portable electronics, building-integrated photovoltaics, and other emerging markets. As research continues, the company remains focused on scaling up its technology while maintaining high efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
