Toshiba 5cm square organic thin film photovoltaic cell conversion efficiency of 9.9%
Toshiba made a significant breakthrough in organic photovoltaic (OPV) technology on July 31, 2014, when it announced that its trial-produced 5cm x 5cm OPV module achieved a remarkable conversion efficiency of 9.9%. This marked the highest efficiency recorded for modules of this size globally. Additionally, the company's 1cm x 1cm OPV cell reached an impressive efficiency of 11.2%. The company set an ambitious target to achieve over 10% efficiency in large-scale modules measuring approximately 30cm x 30cm by 2015.
This progress came just two years after Toshiba first announced an efficiency of 7.7% for its 5cm x 5cm OPV module and 9.2% for its unit cell in September 2012. The recent improvement was driven by the development of a proprietary p-type organic semiconductor material capable of efficiently absorbing long-wavelength light. Toshiba also introduced an inverted structure design, which enhanced performance and stability.
Despite these advancements, the manufacturing process remained largely unchanged from the module released in 2012. The company still used the "Meniscus Coating" technique, a cost-effective and scalable method for producing thin-film layers. However, this time, Toshiba employed advanced simulation tools to optimize the component’s structure, leading to a significant increase in the fill factor (FF). These combined efforts played a key role in achieving the high conversion efficiency.
The improvements highlight Toshiba's ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of organic solar technology, making it more efficient and viable for future commercial applications. As research continues, the company is likely to explore new materials and techniques to further boost performance and reduce production costs.
