However, in China, the reliance on imported sensors remains high, which poses challenges for long-term technological independence and national security. This dependency is not sustainable, and the need for localizing sensor technology has become more urgent than ever.
Intelligent transportation is not just about building roads or expanding infrastructure; it’s about leveraging advanced technologies to create smarter, more efficient, and environmentally friendly urban mobility solutions. The National New Urbanization Plan (2014–2020) emphasized the importance of smart, green, and low-carbon urban development. As such, integrating high-tech solutions like sensors into traffic management systems is essential for improving efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and cutting emissions.
At the core of any intelligent transportation system lies the sensor. These devices act as the “eyes†and “ears†of the system, collecting real-time data from vehicles, roads, and traffic signals. For example, wireless sensor networks can monitor vehicle movements at intersections, helping optimize traffic signal control and significantly improve traffic flow. Additionally, position sensors contribute to fuel efficiency and emission reduction by enabling more precise control of vehicle systems.
Looking ahead, four key factors are expected to drive growth in China’s intelligent transportation industry: fuel efficiency, emission regulations, production efficiency, and regional infrastructure development. Sensors will be integral to each of these areas.
Fuel efficiency is becoming increasingly important as oil prices rise. Advanced sensors, such as those used in intelligent hydraulic pumps, can help reduce fuel consumption by up to 15%. In the realm of emission control, stricter regulations are pushing for cleaner technologies. Sensors like camshaft and crankshaft position sensors are vital for meeting new emission standards, especially in construction machinery, where one excavator can emit as much as 30 cars.
Production efficiency is another major driver. With automation on the rise, sensors that enhance vehicle performance and operational efficiency are in high demand. Finally, as urbanization accelerates, the need for smart infrastructure is growing, creating significant opportunities for sensor-based automation solutions.
Despite this potential, China still faces challenges in sensor technology. Domestic sensors lag behind their international counterparts in accuracy and reliability. Over 80% of sensors and 90% of sensor chips are imported, leaving critical industries vulnerable. While some domestic manufacturers have captured the low-end market, high-end segments remain dominated by foreign companies.
State-owned enterprises, while growing steadily, often struggle to keep up with rapid technological advancements. High costs of advanced manufacturing equipment further limit domestic innovation. To address these issues, China must invest more in research, encourage collaboration between academia and industry, and foster a culture of innovation.
The future of intelligent transportation depends on overcoming these challenges. By investing in R&D, promoting technical exchanges, and supporting domestic innovation, China can reduce its reliance on imports and build a more self-sufficient and competitive sensor industry. Only then can it fully harness the potential of smart cities and the Internet of Things.
