Wallpapers in today’s market come in a wide variety, with diverse materials and vibrant color patterns. But what really sets them apart? How do they compare to traditional paints, and what are their pros and cons? And most importantly, how can consumers make the best choice when selecting wallpaper for their homes?
Choosing the Right Wallpaper: Ask, Smell, and Touch
In recent years, non-woven wallpapers have gained popularity due to their excellent performance across various aspects. However, the price range is quite broad, from around 60 yuan to over a thousand. This huge variation has led some unscrupulous merchants to sell low-quality products under misleading labels. Many consumers end up buying substandard products at high prices because the packaging lacks clear information about the manufacturer or origin.
To help buyers avoid such pitfalls, Xu Zhisheng, an architectural and energy marketing commissioner at the Oslo Group, recommends a simple but effective method: “Ask, Smell, and Touch.â€
First, ask whether the wallpaper is domestically produced or imported. If it's claimed to be imported, request a detailed explanation of the differences between domestic and imported versions. This helps verify the authenticity of the product.
Second, smell the wallpaper. With growing awareness of health and safety, many consumers now prioritize eco-friendly options. High-quality, environmentally friendly wallpapers should not emit any strong chemical odors. If you detect a pungent or unpleasant smell, it’s likely not a good choice.
Third, touch the surface. Premium non-woven wallpapers feel soft and smooth to the touch, with no visible creases. During installation, it’s common for the wallpaper to be folded, so if it feels stiff like paper, it may develop wrinkles after being applied to the wall, which could look unattractive. If you’re unsure about the texture, ask the seller to provide samples for comparison. For high-end or imported products, you’ll often find unique surface effects such as long-fiber textures, stripes, or cross-stitch patterns—features that are typically difficult to achieve with local production methods.
