Wallpapers in today’s market come in a wide range of styles, materials, and colors, making it hard for consumers to choose the right one. But what really sets different types of wallpaper apart? How do they compare to traditional paint in terms of benefits and drawbacks? And what should buyers look for when selecting a quality product?

How to Choose the Right Wallpaper: Ask, Smell, and Touch

Non-woven wallpapers have become increasingly popular due to their excellent performance, but prices can vary greatly, ranging from 60 yuan to over a thousand. This wide price gap often leads to confusion among consumers. Some end up buying low-quality products at high prices because the packaging lacks clear information about the manufacturer, origin, or material quality.

To help consumers make better choices, Xu Zhisheng, an architectural and energy marketing commissioner at the Oslo Group, recommends a simple method: "Ask, Smell, and Touch."

First, Ask: When purchasing, ask the seller whether the wallpaper is domestically produced or imported. If it claims to be imported, request a detailed explanation of the differences between domestic and imported versions. This helps identify genuine products and avoid misleading sales tactics.

Second, Smell: With increasing awareness of health and safety, it's important to check if the wallpaper uses eco-friendly inks and non-toxic substrates. A high-quality, environmentally friendly wallpaper should not have any strong chemical or plastic-like odors. If you detect a pungent smell, it might indicate poor quality or harmful chemicals.

Third, Touch: High-quality non-woven wallpaper feels soft and smooth to the touch, with no visible creases. During installation, the wallpaper may be folded, so it's important that it doesn't develop wrinkles easily. If it feels as stiff as paper, it may be difficult to apply and could leave unsightly marks on the wall. If you're unsure about the texture, ask the seller to provide samples for comparison. For premium options, especially imported ones, the surface may have unique effects like long-fiber textures, stripes, or cross-stitch patterns—features that are often difficult to achieve with local production techniques.
