In the past three years, the province has witnessed remarkable progress in scientific and technological innovation, driven by the establishment of academician workstations. From the roaring sound of heavy machinery in equipment manufacturing plants to the pristine conditions of biological agent production lines, from the massive output value generated by the new energy vehicle industry chain to the rapid growth of high-tech enterprises in superhard materials—this transformation highlights the dynamic development fueled by academician-led initiatives.
Academician workstations have blossomed like spring flowers across the Central Plains, becoming a crucial "high-tech chip" that enhances the quality and efficiency of economic construction in the region. These workstations have not only accelerated the province's economic growth but also attracted more than 200 academicians to contribute their expertise.
According to data released by the Provincial Science and Technology Department on April 3, the province has set up 152 academician workstations, introducing 201 academicians to conduct research and development. A total of 43 national-level major scientific projects, including the "863", "973", and Science and Technology Support Program, have been organized. Additionally, over 378 collaborative projects involving industry, academia, and research have been launched, solving more than 500 technical challenges for enterprises and institutions. Over 280 scientific achievements and 600 patents have been obtained, marking significant progress in innovation.
On September 17, 2008, during the 10th China Association for Science and Technology Annual Meeting held in Zhengzhou, provincial leader Guo Gengmao signed the "Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement" with the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the "Joint Implementation of Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Agreement" with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This marked a new chapter in science and technology cooperation between the province and national research institutions.
In March 2010, the Provincial Science and Technology Department initiated the construction of academician workstations, opening new fields for science and technology cooperation. This initiative has become an innovative model to guide top-tier talents and their teams to support regional economic development under new circumstances.
From the organizational perspective, academician workstations in the province have shown a diverse structure, ranging from large enterprises to multiple institutions. The allocation of high-level intellectual resources has become more optimized and rational. In terms of industrial categories, the focus is on key industries such as equipment manufacturing, biopharmaceuticals, metallurgical chemicals, automotive parts, and power, effectively driving industrial technology innovation and structural upgrades.
The results of these efforts are impressive. Academician Zhang Wei and his team have established several workstations in the province, helping solve critical technical issues in the traditional metallurgical industry. Their collaboration with Cayman Aluminum (Sanmenxia) Co., Ltd. achieved a world-first breakthrough in red mud de-alkalization.
Moreover, industry-academia-research cooperation has been promoted, accelerating the transformation of scientific and technological achievements. For instance, AVIC Lithium (Luoyang) Co., Ltd. partnered with Xiamen University and other renowned domestic and international institutions. In May last year, three academicians—Chen Yunbo, Tian Zhongqun, and Tian Zhaowu—established a lithium battery workstation, building a high-level research and industrialization platform. This led to the successful commercialization of several patented technologies, providing strong technical support for enterprise competitiveness.
In addition, the workstations have played a vital role in talent training. Luoyang Institute of Technology, for example, introduced Academician Wang Mengshu and Academician Gu Jincai in the field of Tunnel and Underground Engineering. Over the past two years, they have participated in 13 national-level projects, cultivating a group of high-level professionals.
According to the head of the Provincial Science and Technology Department, in the past three years, the province has adhered to a demand-driven approach, focusing on projects and enterprises to ensure the effective participation of academicians. By integrating academicians, enterprises, and technology, the province has realized long-term sustainable development and explored a new model for the flexible introduction of high-end talents.
