Academician workstation becomes Henan "accelerator"

In the past three years, academician workstations have blossomed across the Central Plains, becoming a "high-tech chip" that boosts the quality and efficiency of regional economic development. From the roaring of heavy machinery in equipment manufacturing plants to the ultra-clean production lines of biological agents, from the massive output value of the new energy vehicle industry chain to the rapid growth of high-tech enterprises in superhard materials—these developments highlight the transformative power of science and technology. Academician workstations have become a key driver in enhancing industrial innovation and accelerating economic progress. According to statistics from the Provincial Science and Technology Department, as of now, the province has established 152 academician workstations and brought in 201 academicians to work within them. A total of 43 major national-level scientific research projects, including the “863,” “973,” and Science and Technology Support Programs, have been organized. Additionally, over 378 collaborative projects involving industry, academia, and research have been launched, solving more than 500 technical challenges for enterprises and institutions. Over 280 scientific achievements have been obtained, with more than 600 patents of various types filed. On September 17, 2008, during the 10th China Association for Science and Technology Annual Meeting held in Zhengzhou, provincial leader Guo Gengmao signed the “Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement” with the Chinese Academy of Engineering on behalf of Henan Province. He also signed the “Joint Implementation of Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Agreement.” This marked a new chapter in science and technology cooperation between provinces. In March 2010, the Provincial Science and Technology Department initiated the construction of academician workstations, opening up new fields for science and technology collaboration. It became an innovative model to guide high-level talents and their teams to support regional economic development under new circumstances. The academician workstations in the province have shown a diverse range, from large enterprises to multiple institutions, making the allocation of high-level intellectual resources more optimized and efficient. The focus is on the province’s key industries and emerging strategic sectors, such as equipment manufacturing, biopharmaceuticals, metallurgical chemicals, automotive parts, and power. These efforts have significantly promoted industrial technological innovation and structural upgrades. The results of the workstations are impressive: - They have helped enterprises overcome technological bottlenecks and drive industrial transformation. For example, Academician Zhang Wei and his team have set up several workstations in the province, solving key technical problems in traditional metallurgy. Their collaboration with Cayman Aluminum (Sanmenxia) Co., Ltd. achieved the world's first breakthrough in red mud de-alkalization. - They have promoted collaboration between industry, academia, and research, accelerating the commercialization of scientific achievements. AVIC Lithium (Luoyang) Co., Ltd. has formed deep partnerships with Xiamen University and other top universities and research institutes. In May last year, three academicians—Chen Yunbo, Tian Zhongqun, and Tian Zhaowu—established a lithium battery workstation, creating a high-level platform for research and industrialization. This has successfully transformed several patented technologies, providing strong technical support for enterprise competitiveness. - They have enhanced talent training through collaboration. For instance, Luoyang Institute of Technology introduced Academician Wang Mengshu and Academician Gu Jincai in the field of tunnel and underground engineering. Over the past two years, they have participated in or led 13 national-level projects, cultivating a group of high-level professionals. According to officials from the Provincial Science and Technology Department, in the past three years, the province has focused on demand-driven, project-based, and enterprise-oriented approaches, ensuring the substantive involvement of academicians. By focusing on the core of workstation construction and development, it has effectively integrated academicians, enterprises, and technology with the economy, achieving long-term sustainable development and exploring an effective model for flexible talent introduction.
