In the short period of 10 years since the launch of the refrigerator, the proportion of household refrigerators in the United States has jumped from 0 to over 70%. By the early 1960s, the penetration rate reached an astonishing 100%.
Before the refrigerator was invented, people in the 19th century could only preserve food by sealing or pickling. Americans use fermentation technology to make the remaining milk into a more easily preserved dairy product, while they use whiskey and rich cider to make fruit wine for long-term storage.
