The history of the social development of perlite

Before 1980, the development of thermal insulation materials in China was extremely limited. Only a few factories were producing small quantities of products like expanded perlite insulation materials, which failed to meet the growing demands of national construction in terms of variety, specifications, and quality. Compared to the advanced technologies abroad, China's industry was at least 30 years behind. For example, by that time, there were only three companies in the country, with an annual output of just 8,000 cubic meters. Since the reform and opening up, the thermal insulation material industry has made significant progress. It has evolved into a relatively complete production and technical system, especially for perlite-based insulation materials. By 1996, the national output of expanded perlite reached about 6 million cubic meters, with a weight of approximately 450,000 tons. Despite this growth, there are still several key gaps between China’s thermal insulation materials and those of industrialized countries. First, in many foreign countries, the construction industry is the largest consumer of perlite insulation materials, accounting for around 80% of total production. However, in China, the construction market remains underdeveloped, and only about 10% of production is used in this sector. Second, the overall production process and management systems need improvement, leading to inconsistent product quality. Third, investment in scientific research and application technology has been insufficient, particularly in the development of construction-related applications for perlite insulation materials, which has slowed down for years and hindered the industry’s sustainable growth. Looking back, China’s perlite insulation materials industry has come a long way over the past 30 years, especially during the last two decades of rapid development. Many products have evolved from being non-existent to diverse, with improved quality and a broader range of options such as expanded perlite, perlite insulation boards, and vitrified micro-beads. The technology and production equipment have also seen significant improvements, with some products reaching international standards by the 1990s. However, due to the late start of the industry and the overall lower level of technology and equipment, the application techniques in construction still need refinement, which continues to limit the widespread adoption of perlite insulation materials.
