To ensure the smooth operation and shine of SKF roller bearings, it's essential to properly apply and maintain the bearing grease. Start by applying a small amount of smoothing agent between your fingers. If there are any contaminants, you can feel them or apply a thin layer of the agent on the back of your hand before sealing it. This helps in removing impurities effectively.
Next, replace the old grease with fresh lubricant. Use an oily smooth roller bearing to remove the old oil, and if possible, refill with new oil. Then, rotate the machine at a low speed for a few minutes. The oil will help collect any remaining contaminants, which should then be drained out. Always make sure to filter the oil before using it again to avoid introducing new particles into the system.
When replacing the grease, use SKF bearing grease specifically designed for this purpose. Be careful not to let any cotton fibers come into contact with the bearing parts, as these fibers can get lodged between the rolling elements and cause damage. This is especially important when working with smaller bearings.
After some time of operation, the bearing’s vibration and noise levels should remain stable. The frequency spectrum will typically show only one or two frequencies, and the three times power frequency is rarely seen. This indicates that the bearing is in good condition.
However, during extended operation, the bearing may enter its late stage. At this point, vibration and noise levels start to increase, and unusual sounds might appear. Although the increase in vibration is gradual, the kurtosis value (a measure of signal sharpness) may suddenly rise. This could indicate the onset of early faults.
At this stage, it's crucial to closely monitor the bearing and pay attention to any changes. As the bearing continues to operate, the kurtosis value may drop rapidly and return to normal, while vibration and noise levels significantly increase. When the vibration exceeds the specified limits (such as ISO 2372 standards), the kurtosis value also begins to rise sharply. At this point, the bearing is likely in a late-stage failure state and requires immediate maintenance or replacement.
Bearings exhibiting late-stage fault characteristics often show severe issues such as shaft damage, burning, sand cracks, raceway wear, or cage wear. These problems can develop quickly, especially in larger equipment where the operating speed is higher. Therefore, in real-world SKF bearing diagnostics, once late-stage fault indicators are detected, the bearing should be considered faulty and replaced promptly.
