Ms. Wang, a resident of Shenyang, spent over 100,000 yuan to renovate her new home with great care. However, the house remained unoccupied for almost a year, and when she finally moved in, the indoor air quality was found to be more than ten times above the safety standard. This is not an isolated case—over half of the homes tested in Shenyang have shown dangerously high levels of indoor pollutants. Many people, like Ms. Wang, are unaware of the risks until it's too late. The phrase "moving into a new home and getting a new illness" has become all too real for many families.
The Shenyang Environmental Monitoring Center’s findings confirm this alarming trend. According to their data, more than half of the tested family rooms exceed safe air quality standards. One such case is that of Ms. Sun, who recently moved into a luxurious apartment in the Weinan New District. After two months of renovation, she and her family moved in—but soon, her 9-year-old son developed a skin condition, and doctors diagnosed him with aplastic anemia.
Concerned, Ms. Sun suspected the source of the problem was the decoration. Testing revealed that formaldehyde and benzene levels in her master bedroom were severely out of line with safety regulations, with the son's room showing benzene levels 24 times higher than the national standard. Doctors explained that these volatile chemicals, released from newly installed materials, can enter the bloodstream through breathing and then affect the liver, potentially leading to serious health issues like aplastic anemia.
Despite using what she believed to be “green†and standard-compliant building materials—including sandwich panels, latex paint, adhesives, and putty—Ms. Sun still ended up with a “toxic gas room.†Xu Fengyou, Secretary-General of the Shenyang City Building Decoration Association, clarified that “standard materials†do not equate to “environmentally friendly†ones. He pointed out several key misunderstandings: first, standard compliance does not mean zero harmful substances; second, even small amounts of toxins can accumulate over time; third, mixing different materials can lead toè¶…æ ‡ pollution; and fourth, individual items may meet standards but together they can cause problems.
For ordinary homeowners, distinguishing between genuine eco-friendly products and misleading marketing is extremely difficult. Moreover, while national standards set limits on harmful substances, they don’t guarantee complete safety. If too much material is used in a small space or if construction practices are poor, indoor air pollution can quickly become a serious issue.
Formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia, and hydrazine are the four main sources of indoor pollution. In Shenyang, formaldehyde remains the most common pollutant. Liu Peng, deputy director of the Shenyang Environmental Monitoring Center, noted that while past pollution mainly came from decoration materials, today’s trends show that furniture has become a new concern. With less use of traditional materials like wallpaper and MDF, furniture—especially cheap or poorly made pieces—has emerged as a major source of toxins. Some so-called “solid wood†furniture contains only a small percentage of real wood, and others use excessive glue, which releases harmful gases when exposed to heat or dryness.
Additionally, deodorants are now commonly used in decoration products. While they mask the smell, they don’t eliminate the underlying danger. As Liu Peng warns, some people downplay the risk of indoor pollution, but the consequences can be lifelong. He recommends that those concerned should avoid moving in for at least six months after renovation, and testing after three months provides a more accurate picture of long-term air quality. Ignoring the issue now could cost you dearly later.
