Analysis of the trend of CNC machine tools market

Abstract CNC machine tool technology has experienced significant progress and made several breakthroughs in high-speed, multi-axis, precision, and composite capabilities. Despite these advancements, there remains a considerable gap in terms of accuracy and reliability compared to foreign counterparts. The development of CNC technology continues to evolve across various dimensions such as speed, integration, precision, and axis flexibility.

The level, diversity, and production capacity of CNC machine tools are strong indicators of a nation’s industrial strength. China's entry into the CNC machine tool market came later than that of the U.S. and Germany. After nearly half a century of development, China still lags behind countries like Germany, the U.S., and Japan. Domestically, most CNC machines are focused on low-end and mid-range models, capturing about 70–80% of the market. Meanwhile, over 90% of CNC systems—both basic and advanced—are dominated by foreign companies.

Currently, while China has some strengths in low-end CNC products, it still faces challenges in high-end machine tools, which are essential for key industries such as aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding, and power generation equipment. Although the country has launched a major project aimed at advancing high-end CNC technology and basic manufacturing equipment, with a goal to meet 80% of demand in these sectors by 2020, only a few achievements have been realized so far. For example, a high-efficiency CNC automatic stamping line developed by Jiji Machine Tool has successfully reached commercialization. However, further efforts are needed in developing critical components and advanced CNC systems.

In 2014, the industry is expected to grow steadily while adjusting its structure. To remain competitive, the CNC machine tool sector must restructure its existing industrial layout and focus on developing high-end products based on current mid-range achievements. On one hand, it must face competition from foreign and joint-venture products, especially in the mid-range market. On the other hand, it should invest more in R&D to enter the high-end market and reduce dependency on foreign technologies.

From an R&D perspective, companies are implementing innovative strategies supported by national policies, with enterprises as the main actors and innovation as the driving force. Given that the machine tool industry requires substantial investment and long-term returns, relying solely on internal efforts is not sufficient. Collaboration among multiple companies, along with the involvement of research institutions in public-private partnerships (PPP), can help accelerate technological progress. At the national level, increased funding for basic research and training of R&D personnel will be crucial.

In 2014, China’s CNC machine tool industry is expected to develop steadily based on the performance of 2013. Output is likely to increase slightly, and import demand will remain high. However, the demand will increasingly favor high-end products, while mid-range models will gain more traction in the domestic market in the coming years.
