Children's furniture also contains heavy metal market hard test report

“In the past, I only knew that children's furniture might contain harmful substances like formaldehyde, but I had never heard of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, or cadmium,” said Mr. Li, who was planning to buy children’s furniture for his kids. However, a “heavy metal test report” he came across left him shocked.

Last weekend, Mr. Li visited a children’s furniture store in the North Double Line market. “To ensure my child’s health, I always check the environmental protection standards, especially regarding formaldehyde levels,” he explained. At the Flinda Children’s Furniture Store, his daughter fell in love with a pink set of furniture. The salesperson assured them that the products were eco-friendly and safe, even showing them several environmental certificates and quality reports. But when Mr. Li saw the “heavy metal test report,” which listed lead, mercury, and cadmium, he became concerned. Although all levels were within the safety range, he couldn’t shake the worry that children’s furniture might still contain dangerous elements.

What confused him most was why the store called itself “green” if it contained heavy metals. He also wondered if this kind of test was mandatory by law or just rare in the market.

Experts say almost all furniture contains some level of heavy metals.

When the reporter reached out to an expert from the Municipal Quality Supervision and Inspection Institute, Zhang, he explained that while many people overlook heavy metals, they are actually present in nearly all furniture on the market, including children’s furniture. According to reports, these metals mainly come from surface coatings, such as paint. Even if the paint is made from non-toxic materials, it can still contain trace amounts of heavy metals. Some colored fabrics may also contribute to this issue.

Zhang emphasized that consumers don’t need to panic about the presence of heavy metals, as long as the levels meet national safety standards. According to the “General Technical Conditions for Children’s Furniture” issued in August 2012, eight heavy metals—cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, antimony, arsenic, barium, and selenium—must be within specified limits. For example, lead must not exceed 90 mg/kg, cadmium no more than 75 mg/kg, and so on.

On-site investigation: Heavy metal testing is rarely available in furniture stores.

Despite the presence of heavy metals in most furniture, reporters found that few stores, whether selling children’s or adult furniture, provided heavy metal test reports. In one children’s furniture store, the salesperson claimed their products were eco-friendly, using only a thin layer of environmentally safe paint. When asked for a heavy metal test report, the merchant admitted they didn’t have one.

Compared to formaldehyde, the presence of heavy metals in furniture is often overlooked by both manufacturers and consumers. Many companies promote their products as “eco-friendly” or “green,” sometimes even claiming they have “no heavy metals.” However, experts point out that most domestic furniture, including children’s furniture, contains some level of heavy metals. Yet, few businesses conduct tests for them. Most reports focus on formaldehyde, leaving heavy metals largely unaddressed. This lack of attention is concerning, as heavy metal testing should not be ignored, especially when purchasing furniture for children. Consumers should look for products that include heavy metal test reports to ensure greater safety and reliability.
