In recent days, the slowing growth of China's gross national product has sparked widespread discussion. Zhao Chunjiang, Director of the Solar Energy Research Institute at Shanghai University of Electric Power, was one of the first in China to install a home-based PV system on his roof in 2006. His setup, consisting of 22 solar panels, functions like a small 30-megawatt power plant. Though modest compared to large thermal plants, his system produces clean, high-quality 220V AC electricity that is indistinguishable from conventional sources. Zhao believes that in the future, such systems will be sold as complete units, similar to buying a TV, with professional installation required.
The cost of setting up a residential PV system is not as high as one might think. Zhao invested over 120,000 yuan in 2006, and later, after moving to a new home in 2012, he spent just 50,000 yuan on a new system. His current setup generates 3.5 kW of power, producing more than 4,100 kWh annually. Most of this is used at home, with the remaining 2,000 kWh sent back to the grid. Zhao’s wife shares her excitement, noting how their quality of life has improved—air conditioners and other appliances are now used freely without worrying about electricity bills.
Despite the benefits, early adopters faced challenges. When Zhao installed his system, the local power company initially billed him for electricity, assuming he was still drawing from the grid. This led to confusion, and only after installing a bidirectional meter did the system function properly. Similar issues arose for Chen Jilin, another early PV user, who worried about policy changes and unclear tariffs.
While the potential of distributed PV is vast, adoption remains slow. In Shanghai, only six households have installed rooftop systems. Challenges include unclear policies, lack of standardized pricing, and limited public awareness. However, recent developments suggest progress. In 2013, Chen Jilin became the first in Shanghai to receive payment for excess electricity, earning 116 yuan from the grid company. His 2.5 kW system generates around 2,500 kWh per year, which can offset most of his electricity costs.
Experts believe that with proper policy support, the market for residential PV could grow rapidly. The government has introduced subsidies and favorable pricing, aiming to boost the industry. Projects like Hangzhou East Railway Station’s 10 MW PV system highlight the potential of large-scale installations. Meanwhile, companies like Zhejiang Zhengtai are leading the way, showing that PV can be both economically viable and environmentally beneficial.
As the demand for clean energy grows, the future of distributed PV looks promising. With continued policy support and increased awareness, more households may soon enjoy the benefits of generating and selling their own electricity.
